Beautiful prose about the horror of colonialism

Content warning vague spoilers, particularly in TW at the end of the review

Assembly frequently reads like a poem and is visceral about the devastating effects of colonialism on a person. It critiques English/British natioanlism, racism and classism directly and intermingles these critiques extremely well. The character is very distinct; we learn later why she expresses herself the way she does in the book.

If a book was a pop song

At the end of the book, in the Author's note, Scalzi describes this book as a pop song, and it's a great description. It's about a secret organisation that looks after Kaiju. It's about billionaires being dicks. Best of all, it's hilarious.

Heart warming

This is a really comforting and caring book. The children are written so well, and the queer love story is delightful. I really felt Pratchett's influence in the book too, which is always a lovely feeling. It just felt like a hug in a book, and sometimes that's all you need.
