I love big Fantasy settings and like to delve deep into far-off realms. I read for fun and to relax, though not as often as I would like to. Apart from Fantasy, an occaisonal crime/thriller might cross my path. I usually read the books in English, sometime in my mother's tongue German (e.g. if it is a German original or has been translated from another language than English). Not a big fan of e-readers, I have one, but I love the "feel" of an actual book.

Jussi Adler-Olsen: Verheißung (EBook, German language, 2015, dtv) 4 stars

Spirituelle Schnitzeljagd

3 stars

EN: A solid crime thriller, with some passages that are too contrived. For me, it was Adler-Olsen's first book, so I didn't connect with the main investigator's past. Unfortunately, some passages are very antiquated and unnecessarily stereotypical. The two sidekicks Rose and Assad are fun, but remain too pale for my liking.

The case itself is more of a paper chase than a typical murder case, …

reviewed The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne (The Bloodsworn Trilogy, #1)

John Gwynne: The Shadow of the Gods (2021, Little, Brown Book Group Limited) 4 stars

High potential lost in countless battles

3 stars

So much potential but then it is just one battle scene after another. I liked the overall theme and the three main characters' plot lines, each driven by their individual motives. The book takes a lot of time starting off, about a quarter of the book where not much is happening. And the main story was too foreseeable, and just too much hack and slash. Not bad in general, but nothing that made me want to read the next book.

Holly Black: The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air) (2018, Hot Key Books) 4 stars

Slow start with a stronger finish!

4 stars

It started a bit slow, introducing world and main characters but around two thirds of the book it took a very story defining turning point and the pace went up heavily. I enjoyed especially the last part and will be continuing with the other books of the series.

Simon Beckett: Kalte Asche (Paperback, German language, 2008, Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag) 4 stars

The no. 1 international bestselling sequel to The Chemistry of Death.

On his way back …

Again, I liked the scientific, forensic parts of the book. The main plot is almost a generic crime thriller one, but I was a bit disappointed by the multiple "turning points" near the end of the book. One too many for me.

reviewed Farilane by Michael J. Sullivan (The Rise and Fall, #2)

Michael J. Sullivan: Farilane (Hardcover, 2023, Riyria Enterprises, LLC.) 5 stars

SOME TRUTHS ARE DANGEROUS, CERTAIN SECRETS BEST CONCEALED, AND ONE STORY NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN …

It was so much fun to read!

5 stars

Content warning After Nolyn, which I did not like as much as other Sullivan books, Farilane was a blast! I loved the main character, her progress, the connections to so many of the other books. I loved the other "main" character and the overall story.
