The whole romantic subplot made me cringe
Yeah, that was probably my only real issue with this book. It felt forced and cringy. I felt like they didn't pay it off in the end either, though perhaps they do in Death's End. I was really hoping they would explore the idea of the mental projection character more, and by just finding a person identical to the projection I felt like they undermined the concept.

Coming off of the TV show, my introduction to the Sandman novels didn't disappoint. The story is intriguing and has similar beats to what I expected from the show. The most striking part of this book is the art; it pushes the limits of the graphic novel as a medium, in a similar but more drastic way than Watchmen. This book suffers from the fact that discussing almost any aspect of the book would be a spoiler. It is very good, though I do wish it were more character driven. The sequel in the trilogy, the Dark Forest, more than makes up for any shortcomings in this book however.
