The Player of Games is a science fiction novel by Scottish writer Iain M. Banks, first published in 1988. It was the second published Culture novel. A film version was planned by Pathé in the 1990s, but was abandoned.

A lot of people recommend player of games as a good entry point to The Culture books. It's enjoyable and shows both the Culture and its "interesting" side off very well. The climactic game makes more sense if you've read "Consider Phlebas". Hopefully the Folio Society will publish the rest of the culture novels
